1. How long will my Selfie Background Check take?
On average, background checks are completed within 72 hours. However, it does depend on the types of searches that are ordered, the process at the individual courthouses, and if additional research is being done to verify the accuracy of the specific records. It can take up to 5 days, however 86% of the reports are completed in 3 business days, (72 hours).
2. What if I find a mistake on my Selfie Background Check?
If you find an error in your Selfie Background Check, you can make a dipute by emailing our customer support team at [email protected] with the word Dispute in the subject line. We will reinvestigate your dispute and get back to you within 30 days.
Keep in mind, the Social Security Search may have people other than yourself listed on there; that is not necessarily a mistake. Since the Social Security Search will report any information associated with that number, it may be from that person being involved in your transaction; either directly such as a co-signer for a loan, or even indirectly like both names being on an apartment lease. Another reason may simply be that it was a typo from a transaction in which someone had a similar number as yours. The Social Security Search is used as an identifier to bring up information that can be matched on your court records

3. How is a Selfie Background Check different from an "instant database background check" that I see some online companies offer?
Many of these companies will initially offer a "free" and "instant" background check or they may call it a "national criminal check," giving you the false impression that it is a comprehensive check. As you wait for your information to come up, it may ask you pay to "view the possible records" on you. This is just a "database" check, meaning they are only offering an online criminal search taken from various public record sources that is often not updated.
County courts are where all criminal records originate from, and many county courts do not make their records accessible to be used for any databases. Therefore, only relying on a "database" search will often produce incomplete records. The only sure way to get accurate and up to date records is to retrieve them directly from the court houses. It is recommended to include a County Criminal search with your background check and not to only rely on a "National Database Criminal Check.'

4. What is the Social Security Search? Why do I have to provide my Social Security Number if you said they do not appear on any court/criminal records?
Just as commercial background checks are done, certain information is needed to verify the correct person is being searched. Court records, by design, only contain name and date of birth of a person. Name variations or abbreviations are not included, only exact name and date of birth. That is why a Social Security Number is used in the Person/Identity Search.
When you enter your social security number, it is NEVER seen by human eyes. It is only used by our platform to match any public record information. This will include other variations of your name that you may have used as well as addresses to identify or to rule out any criminal records at the court houses. A completed background check will only have the last four digits of a social security number to verify the proper records were searched.

6. What is the difference between the County Criminal Search, the National Criminal Database Search, and the Federal Criminal Search?
A County Criminal Search is a search of misdemeanors and felonies directly from the county courthouse of where a person is living and/or has lived in the past.
A National Database Criminal Search is a search of a national database collection of misdemeanors and felonies from multiple various online sources, including County Criminal records. Since many county courthouse only give access to their records at their courthouse location and not online, many criminal records may be missed in the National Database Criminal Search. Some county courthouses do have online access, however that information is often not updated on a regular basis. A National Database Criminal Search is a good search to supplement your background check package because it provides a broader scope, offering possible criminal records outside of counties and states that you may have lived.
The Federal Criminal Search is a search of federal crimes, different from misdemeanors and felonies that the county criminal search and the national criminal database search provide. Federal criminal records are filed in the federal courts, therefore a different search is needed to be able retrieve these records. Most often Federal crimes will not appear in a County Criminal Search or a National Database Criminal Search. How a charge is filed will depend on how the authorities originally handled the case, it may have been later upgraded from a felony to a federal crime and therefore still may show up on a County Criminal Search.

7. What is the Monthly / Continuous Monitoring? Do companies really do that? How can the Monthly / Continuous Monitoring help me?
This is a fairly new kind of search that some companies are starting to do now. The thought process behind it is that when a company is about to hire a new employee, they do a background check on that person. But after that, background checks are generally not run on any current employees. So, companies may have current employees employed for several years that may also be convicted criminals, and the employer may not even know it.
The Monthly / Continuous Monitoring gives companies the option to monitor and to be notified when an employee commits a crime. How does this help you?
Anyone can use this service to monitor themselves. It's similar to having credit protection monitoring on yourself, except instead of credit changes, you will be notified of any changes or any new criminal charges on your record. A good example of this is having a warrant out for your arrest for an unpaid parking ticket and not even know it. With Monthly / Continuous Monitoring you would be notified of that warrant within 30 days or less.
In addition, if there is a new criminal charge on your record by mistake, you will be notified.

8. How is my information protected?
The software behind Selfie Background Check is the largest independent technology platform in the background check industry. Selfie Background Check's website is Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) which is the secure version of HTTP. HTTPS is used more now to protect page authenticity on websites; secure accounts; and to keep user communications, identity, and web browsing private.
All transactions are performed in a secured environment. The client’s web browser automatically secures the session with our platform's server by connecting to it using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol with 128-bit encryption. The data travels between client and server encrypted and can only be decrypted with a public and private key pair.
The application server is protected by firewalls, intrusion detection, and filtering routers which verify the source and destination of the request traveling in information packets. The routers and firewalls are configured to reject any unauthorized traffic. The intrusion detection algorithms log every action that comes and goes, to and from our network. The system uses network devices that only allow permitted traffic through the devices. Routers keep out traffic that does not emanate from either end of the secured session between the client and the server.
Our platform is certified compliant with SSAE18/SOC2; as well as EI3PA, and PCI-DSS, both are among the most stringent in the industry. The System and Organization Control report, or SOC 2, was created by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Held as one of the highest accolades of security design that a company can obtain, the SOC 2 is a set of best practices and principles that a company must adhere to if hosting or storing personal or financial information on the cloud.
Several organizations including the Federal Trade Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau laid out a set of standards designed to defend consumer data that goes in and out of an organization.
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, or PCI DSS, is required by all organizations that handle, store, or transfer payment card information.
Selfie Background Check does not share, sell, or reuse any information that has been searched. Selfie Background Check does not maintain any databases of any information. All employees go through multiple background checks and internal audits are performed daily. All employees are also required to complete and pass the PBSA (Professional Background Screeners Association) Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) Basic Certification course and test. This requires a thorough knowledge of best practices and legal requirements for protecting all sensitive consumer data.

9. What does it mean when an alias comes up on a background check? Does it cost more to include that in my Selfie Background Check?
An alias, with regards to background checks, is another name other than the legal name that you entered, that may come up in the identity portion of the background check. The most common examples of this is when a maiden name and a new married name are involved. Since criminal records are recorded and filed by name and date of birth only, a woman can have a criminal conviction on her record before she was married, but after she gets married and changes her name, that conviction, in most cases, will not come up. Because it is a different name.
However, the Social Security Search would bring up that maiden name as a possible match, and therefore would be recommended to searched. There are other situations when this may occur as well, such as when an abbreviated name or a name that is very similar comes up as a possible match.
Since searching another name within the courts is actually doing another search, it would incur an additional cost. If an alias comes up on your Selfie Background Check, you can contact our support team and one of our background check advisors will be able to walk you through how to run the alias.

10. Why am I getting the following message after I place my order; "The transaction was declined. User authentication failed due to invalid authentic values"?
There may be a few reasons why you received this message. If you did not upload a government issued, photo ID, you will receive this message. Another reason is if some of the information that you entered did not match your credentials. You can restart your order with the corrected information, your credit card was not charged since the transaction was not processed.
County Court Access Fees and State MVR Fees
Court Access fees and State issued Motor Vehicle Record fees may be applied to the cost of your Selfie Background Check. These are fees that the County, State, and the government charge to access their records and information. Selfie Background Check does not mark up these charges nor do we have anything to do with what the charges are.
Any company and any individual who requests this information is charged. Each of the counties and statewide offices in the U.S. operate independently and will often charge different amounts; while some do not charge anything at all.
